Anyone who has resided or visited Leisure Beach will surely describe it as a unique waterfront community. Located in Hudson, FL (Pasco County), it was developed in the early 1970s and was originally designed as a BIG canal-front neighborhood. The community was thoughtfully planned around a series of named isles, offering all residents water access and a relaxed coastal lifestyle. While original plans were scaled back due to nature preservation, this concept still defines our community today.
The community was developed originally by Leisure Lands, Inc. It was planned with many more canals than were ultimately put into place, which was common along the coast at the time of original development. Environmental agencies and water-management authorities were involved to ensure the protection of coastal ecosystems - an effort very much appreciated by today's residents.
At the time of initial development, local properties were being set aside for conservation. Nearby Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park was transitioned as protected land along the same timeframe. This effort created a surround of our community including preserved natural areas and an abundance of natural wildflife for us to enjoy.
Original home floorplans were advertised with nautical names including The Floridian, The Sandpiper, and The Beachcomber. Homes were marketed as affordable Florida living. Most were sold as a complete package - lot, home construction, and seawall.
Typical features of original homes that we still see in our homes today include compact and efficient layouts, open living spaces, florida rooms or screened patios.Even homes that have been renovated or re-built since often boast a variation of these concepts - real Florida living!
What we know as Leisure Beach today is a product of both early ambitions and thoughtful evolution. Beginning as a bold waterfront plan has evolved to be a close-knit community enjoying closeness to protected coastal lands and wildlife.
